Survivor 41: Scoop – Week 1 Recap: Winners, Losers, Top Moments
John Powell – GlobalTV.com
It has been 490 days. 490 days without any outwitting, any outlasting, any outplaying…at least in North America.
It has been 490 very long days, folks.
Jeff Probst and a cast 18 new players have finally returned to Fiji but for only 26 days this season, a season which was supposed to be called Survivor: Dawn of a New Era.
I am glad we are here to take it all in and I am fortunate to be your guide once again.
Officially Dawn of a New Era or not, Survivor is back with not only some new advantages but some new punishments as well. The debut episode saw the Yase and Ua tribes temporarily lose their flints because they came in last during the Immunity Challenge, for example. That was a cruel and unusual punishment…which is why I loved it.
This was the final immunity challenge of this year’s season of Australian: Survivor.
It was like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark…which is why I loved it. All that was missing was the snakes.
Snakes! Why does it always have to be snakes?
At 41, Survivor USA has gotten a little bit soft with all those Hidden Immunity Idols, Edge of Extinction and the like. It was time Survivor got back to being savage, primal and merciless once again.
This season not only has two Canadians, Shantel “Shan” Smith and Erika Casupanan, vying for the title of Sole Survivor but also NFL free agent Danny McCray of Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears fame.
Although the game has changed and it has been 21 years since my pal, my late great friend/brother Adrian Bromley told me to tune into this “crazy” new series which would change my life forever, the same tried and true mistakes are being made by the players.
Eric Abraham of Yase and Sara Wilson of Ua were the first castaways to be fed to the sharks but they certainly won’t be the last. Some people just never learn.
Canadians Shantel and Erika were not content to be mere spectators along for the ride on the premiere. Erika was one of the reasons Luvu won immunity with her quick as lightning puzzle-solving skills and Shantel was in the thick of it not only back at camp but at a live tribal council where confusion and accusations reigned suspreme. It would appear that neither are on anyone’s radar just yet. Shan voted with the majority during Ua’s tribal council. It just a shame that the vote wasn’t switched to Ricard as it seemed that he was causing much of the dissension at Ua. He could be one of those players who cause more and more chaos the longer they are left in the game.

Moment # 1: Jeff Probst welcomes viewers back.
Week One: Eric Abraham and Sara Wilson
Eric and Sara both stepped up when they should have stepped back. While Sara might have had a reason to panic and throw others under the bus, Eric should’ve reined himself in better. All he did with his adamant, public statement about Tiffany was activate Evvie’s spider sense. Being the physical threat that he was Eric should have let someone else steer that boat if they wanted to.
Strategic Gameplay
What little we saw them do was incredibly off the mark.
Eric Rating: 1 / 5
Sarah Rating: 1 / 5
Social Gameplay
A big part of the reason why Sara and Eric were voted out was because they didn’t have the social currency to provide them with protection.
Eric Rating: 1 / 5
Sara Rating: 1 / 5
Entertainment Value
We really didn’t see enough of Eric to see if he had any kind of potential. Sara at least appeared to have a fire in her belly.
Eric Rating: 1 / 5
Sara Rating: 2 / 5
Final Castaway Eric Rating: 3 / 15
Final Castaway Sara Rating: 4 / 15
Who played it cool and who proved themselves to be a fool? Every week John Powell makes his picks for the worst and best players of the week.
Perhaps because he is too forward or too out-going but JD has some people doubting his sincerity. Although that isn’t the way you want to start the game he may have time to turn things around.
Eric should have tested the waters more cautiously or let someone else throw names out there instead of doing so himself in the way that he did.
Sara became frazzled, unglued and so did her game.
Erika was not only a part of the scheming but also proved her worth to the tribe leading that immunity win.
She put the wheels in motion to not only protect her allies but to get Eric out.
She appeared to be the glue, the person who pulled a fractured UA back together at tribal council. It might be a sign of how much influence she has on the game and the players.
