The Late Show: Tom Hanks dishes on Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg
One of Stephen’s favourite and most famous guests graced The Late Show with Stephen Colbert again last night. That’s right, the happy and ever-so-kind man that everyone knows and loves to see, Tom Hanks! Boy, Hanks and Colbert get on famously – they don’t miss a beat! Hanks sat across from Colbert and they jumped right into Tom-foolery. This week it was over the American constitution, of all things.
After, these two had a pretty serious discussion over Christmas decorations. It got heated over what kind of lights either puts on their homes. Hanks got snarky. Stephen got defensive. But in the end, they put their differences aside, because ultimately they both agree that Christmas is a time for all-out, outrageous, righteous decorating of one’s own domicile. However, Hanks doesn’t share that with his wife Rita Wilson, and every year the two of them engage in something he likes to call the tinsel war.
Hanks was on promoting his new film The Post, which is about the release of the Pentagon Papers in the early 1970s. It is directed by Steven Spielberg, and Hanks stars alongside Meryl Streep. Talk about Hollywood royalty with those three involved in one project. Hanks had nothing but good things to say about his co-star, though he was taken aback by how down to earth Meryl Streep is.
Now there’s nary a person out there who enjoys watching movies and hasn’t seen one of Steven Spielberg’s films, be it an Indiana Jones flick, the classic E.T., the groundbreaking Jurassic Park, or the affecting Saving Private Ryan. It’s fascinating to hear Hanks’ perspective on Spielberg’s directing style, and even more fascinating to hear Spielberg’s method.
It’s always a joy to see Hanks on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for the reasons that he’s such a charmer, he and Stephen have a lovely rapport, and he just seems like such a swell guy. Given that this is at least his third or fourth appearance already, it won’t be long until we get to see him in the Ed Sullivan Theater again.
