The Late Show: Oprah Gets Sign From God For 2020 Run
The maybe-next-U.S.-President Oprah Winfrey visits The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk politics, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time and her decision on running for president in 2020.
Everybody knows and loves Oprah, from her long-running daytime talk show to her general aura of amazingness. Her recent amazingness includes a 60 Minutes special where she gathers an equal amount of folks who voted for Hillary Clinton and folks who voted for Donald Trump from Michigan, puts them all in a room, and mediates a discussion. And holy smokes, it actually worked.
It’s impressive that she was able to calm the waters, especially with Michigan voters given the warzone it had become during the 2016 election. But of course, wherever there are calm waters, there is someone just waiting to blow enough hot air to create a typhoon.
Oprah’s other upcoming project is in cinemas this week: Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, starring Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling. You’d hope that those three became fast friends – and they did.
Both of Oprah’s costars on A Wrinkle In Time are appearing on The Late Show this week as well – Reese Witherspoon appears Wednesday evening, followed by Mindy Kaling on Thursday!
For long-time Late Show fans, it’s always a hoot seeing Oprah in the Ed Sullivan Theater. For about a decade, former Late Show host David Letterman had an on-going feud with Oprah. He would never give a clear answer as to why – sometimes it was because he once stuck her with his lunch bill at a restaraunt, other times it’s because of a joke he made at the 1995 Oscars. Dave loved to reference this feud, wearing it as a badge and, of course, using it to fuel comedy. They made amends on The Late Show in 2005 and things seem to have cooled.
But that was that Late Show and this is this Late Show. And on this Late Show, Oprah talks about the rumour that she might run for president. Stephen is that sort of interviewer to drag out confessions from his guests, and he tried really hard to get Oprah to admit that she’s at least considering it. But, she’s said she needs a sign from God. So what do you know, the Almighty Himself stopped by the Ed Sullivan Theater – as He is known to do sometimes – to encourage Oprah’s step into federal politics.
