John Mulaney: A Recent Institution
This is Mulaney’s fourth season in a row hosting an episode. He’s becoming a even-more visible institution. Because Mulaney had been a writer on the show for years, with no (or no significant) screen time. But now, it would be weird if Mulaney didn’t host a season. Like if Alec Baldwin went a few years without hosting in the 1990s. Or if Tom Hanks went a few years without hosting in the 1980s. Or if Steve Martin went a few years without hosting in the 1970s/1980s/1990s.
Mulaney brings his homey, boy-next-door style to Saturday Night Live, and usually strips it down to reveal he’s a bit of a weirdo after all. Last year, he gave a great stand-up performance for his monologue:
Not stop laughs in this bit. Here’s hoping he brings more of that energy, and less of the energy he brought last season when he was forced into the Joe Biden role for an episode.
Terrible. Just terrible. Good thing Jim Carrey is around this season.

New York City Bands Ain’t Too Smart
Supporting Mulaney are local New York cool guys The Strokes.
The Strokes are almost as much of a New York institution that Saturday Night Live itself is. But it’s been nearly 10 years since their last appearance on SNL, despite several releases since. This is likely due to the fact when they last hosted in 2011, vocaalist Julian Casablancas improvised a “F*** it” during their performance of Under Cover of Darkness.
It’s live television, Julian. That cost Lorne $50,000; you can’t expect an invite back after doing that.
