On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, Stephen welcomed the Dark Knight, Batman himself, Ben Affleck! Affleck is best known for doing films like 2003s Daredevil, 2003s Gigli, and 2004s Jersey Girl, going away for a while to think about what he’s done, then coming back hard with 2012s Argo and 2014s Gone Girl. Now, he’s the DC Extended Universe’s Batman, first appearing in last year’s Batman v Superman and now in this week’s Justice League. So, I think it’s safe to say to Affleck that Daredevil, Gigli and Jersey Girl are forgiven at this point (but not forgotten – never forgotten).

Stephen kicked off the interview the same way he typically does: he asked Affleck about Donald Trump (hey, he just can’t help himself). Apparently the President is a fan of the idea of Affleck as Batman, and has been for a very long time.

So, to get to the bottom of what’s the best part of playing Batman, you have to dig a little deeper – what would be the best part of being Batman? Obviously, the toys (though being besties with a guy who can instantly heat a microwavable burrito with his eyes ain’t no little thing either – waiting those three and a half minutes can be excruciating when you’re hungry). Being superhero geek that he is, Colbert wanted to know – what cool toys could Affleck take home? Did he get a good gadget haul? Does he have his own set of keys to the Batmobile – you know, just to take out for a spin every once in a while? Well, the answer is yeah, but don’t tell the studio.

Stephen Colbert is who he is, and who he is, is a person who can’t not push buttons, just a little bit. He brought up that it’s been 20 years since Good Will Hunting, the film that launched Ben Affleck’s career (and Matt Damon’s – they wrote it together), was released. The story behind their crusade to get this film made is a fairly well known one, with Affleck and Damon shopping it around for years, hearing many, many rejections, until one production company to a chance of them. Today, it seems rather unfortunate that the company was The Weinstein Company. Colbert put Affleck in the hot seat, and Affleck responds matter-of-factly and generously, pledging the proceeds from those films to organizations who can help.

Stephen Colbert put Affleck in the hot seat even further by bringing up Affleck’s own shortfalls, wondering how he intends to make Hollywood safer for women.

Hopefully Affleck is sincere in his efforts to move forward and to be a champion for making the world a better place. After all, that’s Batman’s main thing, isn’t it?
