Late Show: Robert De Niro Claims Playing Mueller is “Civic Duty”
Robert De Niro returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk Mueller, Trump, and then… to not talk at all!
It was a Tuesday interview on a Friday show. So it wasn’t the most up-to-date Late Show – a bit more noticeably so this week due to the public release of Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump. But the gang at The Late Show knew the report was coming, and that it was going to be hot (it’s hot, if you didn’t know – pay attention!). Who better to get to talk about the Mueller report than the man who played Robert Mueller so many times on Saturday Night Live over the past year?
The only time the general public has heard Mueller’s voice is through De Niro’s mouth. Find a better actor for this job, and that’ll take you down the street and back again (trick question, there is no better actor than De Niro (but it wasn’t really a question, was it?)).
De Niro is thrilled to have played Mueller – it’s his “civic duty,” he says, to the point where he wants to be the one to slap the cuffs on the crook-in-Chief (though does he want to do it as Robert Mueller? He’s unclear on those specifics). Hopefully he can continue to appear on Saturday Night Live as Robert Mueller even though the investigation is over. Who knows, maybe Mueller will become an increasingly important character is the Trump TV show (AKA reality).
After Bobby DN gushed about Mueller, Stephen gave him a chance to relax. De Niro is a bit withheld, notoriously so. Especially on talk shows. Basically, most of the time he seems like he hates being there.
So Colbert gave him one minute of silence to sit, and contemplate, and relax, and… eat ice cream! The minute of silence was legit (though De Niro himself broke it, out of surprise for the ice cream of course). But it was probably just an excuse for Stephen to serve up an ice cream sundae to Robert De Niro. Who can say they’ve done that?
De Niro will be back – he always comes back. He might pretend he hates talk shows – and who knows, maybe he hates those other ones – but it’s clear he loves being on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
